Revit Quick Start Guide – Using Point Clouds

This quick guide is designed to help architects and designers begin working with point clouds in Revit.
In just a few steps, you’ll be able to import scan data and start tracing existing conditions.

Step 1: Import the Point Cloud

1. Open your Revit project.
2. Go to the “Insert” tab → Link panel → select “Point Cloud”.
3. Set file type to .rcp or .rcs and select your scan file.
4. Choose positioning: try “Auto - Center to Center”.
5. Click “Open” – your point cloud will now be visible in your model space.

Step 2: Align and Adjust View Range

1. Switch to an Elevation view and align the point cloud to your Storey levels.
2. In a Floor Plan view, go to Properties → Extents → View Range → Edit…
3. Set cut plane and bottom offsets to limit the cloud to a thin slice.
   For example:
   - Bottom: 1600 mm
   - Cut Plane: 1800 mm

This improves clarity and performance.

Step 3: Start Modeling

Use Revit’s tools to trace walls, floors, and furniture directly from the point cloud. Switch between 3D, section, and floor plan views for more accuracy.
