Using Point Clouds

This guide will help you work with point clouds in SketchUp. It's designed for professionals who need to bring in 3D scan data, align it, and use it for design and documentation purposes.

Install a Point Cloud Extension

SketchUp does not natively support point clouds. Use an extension such as:

- Undet for SketchUp
-
Scan Essentials

Open Your SketchUp Model

Create a new project or open an existing one.

Import the Point Cloud

Use the extension (e.g. Undet or Scan Essentials) to import RCP, LAS, or E57 files.
Follow the plugin's steps for inserting and geolocating the scan.

Adjust the View

Use standard SketchUp tools to orbit, pan, and zoom around the scan.
Toggle visibility settings from the extension toolbar if needed.

Clip or Isolate Areas

Use section planes or clipping boxes to focus on specific regions of the point cloud.

Trace Geometry

Use LINE, RECTANGLE, or Push/Pull tools to trace and build geometry over the scan.

Group and Tag Geometry

Group your traced elements and assign tags for easier model management.
